  1. Introduction

Canucks Men’s Hockey League (“CMHL,” “the League,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates an organized men’s hockey league in the Niagara region and has been in operation since 2023. We maintain a public-facing website at cmhlniagara.com (the “Website”) where we publish team and player information. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and share it, and the rights and choices available to you.

We are committed to handling personal information responsibly and in accordance with Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable Ontario law. By registering for, paying for, or participating in any League activity, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Policy and agree to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information as described below.

  2. Scope and Condition of Participation

Participation in the League is voluntary. However, the public display of player names, statistics, team rosters, and photographs is a core and essential part of how the League operates and promotes itself. For that reason, consent to the collection, use, and publication of this information as described in Section 4 is a condition of registration and participation.

Every player who registers for or participates in the League is subject to this Policy. The League does not offer an option to participate while opting out of the publication of your name, playing statistics, team affiliation, or photographs taken at League events. If you do not agree to these practices, you should not register for or participate in League activities.

  3. Personal Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of personal information:

    • Identifying and contact information you provide at registration, such as your name, email address, telephone number, and emergency contact details.
    • Player and team information, including your jersey number, position, team affiliation, and division.
    • Playing statistics generated through League play, such as games played, goals, assists, points, penalty minutes, goaltending records, and similar performance data.
    • Photographs, video, and other images captured at League games, events, and promotional activities, in which you may appear.
    • Website usage information collected automatically when you visit the Website, such as IP address, browser type, and pages viewed, where applicable.
  4. Publication of Names, Statistics, and Images

As an organized and publicly promoted league, we publish certain personal information openly. By participating in the League, you agree that we may publish, display, and distribute the following on the Website and in League communications and promotional materials:

    • Your full name (or the name under which you register).
    • Your team affiliation, jersey number, and position.
    • Your individual and team playing statistics, including current and historical records.
    • Photographs and video footage taken at League games and events in which you appear, including images that show your face and likeness.

This information may appear on publicly accessible pages of the Website, in standings, leaderboards, game recaps, award announcements, newsletters, and on League social media or other promotional channels. Because the Website is public, this information may be viewed, indexed by search engines, and shared by others outside the League’s control.

You acknowledge and agree that you will not be entitled to any payment, royalty, or other compensation for the use of your name, statistics, or likeness in connection with the operation and promotion of the League.

  5. How We Use Your Personal Information

We use personal information for purposes connected with running and promoting the League, including to:

    • Register players, organize teams and schedules, and administer League play.
    • Record, calculate, and publish individual and team statistics and standings.
    • Communicate with you about schedules, results, events, fees, and League news.
    • Promote the League and its games through the Website, social media, and other materials.
    • Operate, maintain, and improve the Website.
    • Meet legal, insurance, accounting, and safety obligations.
  6. Disclosure to Third Parties

We do not sell your personal information. We may share personal information with:

    • Service providers who help us operate the League and the Website, such as website hosting, statistics platforms, registration software, payment processors, and email or analytics providers, who are permitted to use the information only to provide services to us.
    • Arenas, referees’ associations, insurers, or governing/sanctioning bodies where reasonably required to organize and run League play.
    • Authorities or other parties where required or permitted by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of the League, its participants, or others.

Information you choose to make public, or that we publish under Section 4, may be viewed and used by anyone who accesses the Website.

  7. Website Cookies and Analytics

The Website may use cookies and similar technologies to operate properly and to understand how visitors use it. You can usually adjust your browser settings to refuse cookies, though some features of the Website may not function correctly as a result.

  8. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as necessary to operate the League and maintain historical records. Because statistics, standings, and game records form part of the League’s permanent history, player names, statistics, team rosters, and associated images may be retained and remain published indefinitely, including after a player stops participating.

  9. Safeguarding Your Information

We take reasonable administrative, technical, and physical measures to protect personal information against loss, theft, and unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

  10. Your Rights

Subject to legal limits, you have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you and to request correction of information that is inaccurate or incomplete. To make such a request, please contact us using the details in Section 12.

Please note that, because consent to the publication of your name, statistics, team affiliation, and images is a condition of participation (see Section 2), the League is not able to continue including you in League activities while withholding that information. Withdrawing consent to those core publication practices means you can no longer register for or participate in the League. Historical records already published may be retained as described in Section 8.

  11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The current version will always be posted on the Website with its effective date. Your continued participation in the League after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
